Unit 5: Romeo and Juliet

In the final unit of English I (cue cheering!), we will be studying one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet. My choice to use a cut and condensed version of the script will allow students the time to look more deeply into the language and themes that make this play so remarkable.

Students will practice analyzing literature for themes, study the development of key characters over the course of a text, and practice their speaking and performance skills with weekly activities that will get kids out of their seats and into the minds of two of Shakespeare's most incredible characters!

Unit 4: The I-Search

This semester will be our busiest yet! We open the second semester with a research project called the I-Search. In this unit, students will explore examples of young activists who have made an impact in their community. Students will then conduct research on an issue facing their own community and develop a practical action plan to evoke some kind of solution or change.

Throughout the unit, students will develop research skills, argumentative writing skills, presentation and speaking and listening skills, as they study, plan, and carry out an act of social activism!

Unit 3: Literature Circles!

Quarter 2 brings a new component of the English 1 reading program called literature circles, a process that allows students to select their own books and discuss them with other students.

We are offering ten different books from which your student may choose. The books are drawn from multiple time periods and cultures. This unit is designed to increase reading comprehension, to deepen the students’ understanding of literary terms, and to develop speaking and listening skills.
