Check in at the end of the school day for the most accurate account of what we did that day!
Unit 1: Intro to Course/Developing Trust and Awareness
In this unit, we will begin to unpack the essential question: What is Theatre?
In two short weeks, you will be introduced to the Rules of Theatre, learn basic stage etiquette and form, and participate in daily warm-ups and introductory activities. If this is your very first theatre class, welcome! If you've done theatre before, welcome back! I'm excited you're here.
Unit 2: Tableau
In this unit, students will apply the Rules of Theatre to various still-life performances and develop more body awareness. Students will explore levels and depth, learn to exaggerate their faces and bodies, and work on creating cohesive, structured scenes that have a beginning, middle, and end. Students will work with groups to create a unified final presentation.
Unit 3: Voice/Reader's Theatre
Voice is one of the most basic forms of human expression. Students will learn different vocal techniques for specific scenarios. Students will explore how to use various vocal techniques to both develop character, as well as create emotion and expression. This will be used in later drama projects and activities, but also teaches students life-long skills needed for other school subjects, as well as real life situations such as job interviews and presentations.
Unit 4: Intro to Movement
Students will use exaggerated facial and bodily expression to react to various situations. After all, acting is reacting! We start with Mime and then move into our physical comedy portion of the unit, looking at examples from Charlie Chaplin and the Three Stooges. Next, we cover basic stage combat techniques and finish the unit with a summative performance that covers everything we learned!
Unit 5: Intro to Improvisation
Students will use elements of voice, movement, and storytelling to create various improvisations both rehearsed and spontaneous. Students will practice thinking on their feet and explore ways to tell a story with little to no props, scenery, or costumes. Acceptance is key and students will ensure they are supporting their scene partners throughout the process.
